Janina Ramirez: The Private Lives of the Saints / Anglo-Saxon Art Detective

June 15 - June 16

The brilliant cultural historian, broadcaster and author Dr Janina Ramirez herself is joining us for two evening shows in June, one based around her bestselling book ‘The Private Lives of the Saints’ and the other around her top-charting podcast ‘Art Detective’. Both events will feature an audience Q&A with Dr Ramirez.

Thursday 15th – ‘The Private Lives of Saints: Power and Passion in Anglo-Saxon England’

Skulduggery, power struggles and politics – a fascinating re-examination of Anglo-Saxon England told through the secret lives of the saints. Drawing on a wide range of evidence, from art and literature to archaeology, theology and historical data, Dr Ramirez re-evaluates the role of the saints (from the infamous to the obscure) whose effect was felt throughout the Anglo-Saxon world and can still be felt today, taking them from their heavenly status to the human level and examining their desire for adulation, power, wealth and legacy.

7.30pm, doors 7pm

Friday 16th – Anglo-Saxon Art Detective

Bringing Anglo-Saxon art to life, Dr Ramirez will expand on the fascinating works of the period and the cultural and historical context that produced them. Based on her hit podcast, Dr Ramirez will explore Anglo-Saxon artworks and pepper them – in her own inimitable way – with the faces, colours, drama and expression of their time.

7.30pm, doors 7pm
