Jarrow Hall FAQ
1. How do I get in touch if I have an urgent query?
Our visitor services team will be taking urgent calls with a reduced team during opening hours only. Most information that you will need can be found on our website or on our social media channels. If your query can't wait, please call us on 0191 424 1585 (during public opening times) or email Jarrowhall@groundwork.org.uk
2. How are you cleaning Jarrow Hall?
We have implemented enhanced cleaning regimes in line with government guidance.
3. Do I need to wear a mask or face-covering?
Yes you will need to wear a mask or face-covering while you are in the museum building and in our shop. There is no need to wear it while you enjoy our farm and Anglo-Saxon village.
4. Will your natural play space be open?
Our natural play space which encourages children to explore and allow for social distancing will be open
5. Are people allowed to bring picnics?
Yes, as long as you follow government guidelines on social distancing and put your litter in the bin provided or even better take it home with you. There are picnic tables on the grass beside the natural play space, feel free to use them, but please clean up after yourself and please do not move tables as they have been placed to allow for social distancing.
The picnic tables behind Jarrow Hall house are for Hive Coffee Company customers only and these need to be prebooked with Hive directly. You can preorder food to collect and takeaway. Once you have booked your tickets or slot you can call them on 07715 215476 or message them on @HiveCoffeeCompany on Facebook to pre-order. They are open Thursday -Sunday 10-2pm. 6. Will the museum building be open?
The reception, shop, toilets and small exhibition space will be open and a one way system will be in operation. Our Bede museum will remain closed for the moment and this will be reviewed in the coming weeks and information published.
7. My annual pass ran out between 15th March and 18th July – can I renew online?
If your annual pass ran out between these dates you can still book the Annual Pass holder only day – 18th July. We can’t renew annual passes online right now but you can renew when you visit.
8. I am a wheelchair user, can I access the Farm and Anglo-Saxon Village?
You can access most of the site using a wheelchair, however the upper walkway around the Farm will be difficult to navigate.
We currently have a health and safety issue with the level entrance to the museum building. If you are a wheelchair user please come through the new ‘Exit’ and one of our team will direct you to reception. Please contact our Visitor Services team during opening hours for more information and assistance on 0191 424 1585.
9. Can I leave and then return?
We would like to encourage people not to leave and re-enter as we are limiting the number of people in our museum building.
10. Can I include a visit to St Paul’s Church?
St Pauls Church is currently not open to visitors, however you are very welcome to visit the grounds which includes the ruins of St Paul’s Monastery. The monastery was one of Europe's most influential centres of learning and culture in the 7th century. The remains standing today are from the Medieval monastery, but part of the Anglo-Saxon monastery survives today as the chancel of St Paul's Church.
11. Can I visit the Herb Garden?
Yes you are welcome to visit our herb garden, please ensure you observe social distancing guidance.
12. How will you enforce social distancing?
The safety of our staff and visitors is our main priority. We are limiting numbers of visitors and all visitors need to book before they arrive on site. There are new one way systems in operation on site (see map).
13. Will there be hand sanitiser on site?
There will be hand sanitiser at the entrance as you arrive, please use it.
14. How can I book a visit?
You can book your tickets or a slot if you are an annual pass holder on our website
15. Will I have to print out my tickets or can I show them on my phone?
Visitors should show their tickets on their phone, and you may be asked to share your name and booking number. To maintain social distancing, we’re asking visitors not to pass anything to our staff.
16. How will your booking system work?
Half-hour arrival time slots will be available.
Tickets will be available to book on our website each Friday for the following weekend at 9am.
PLEASE NOTE: Each individual needs to have a timeslot booked. If our system will not allow you to book for your full party, this is typically because there are no longer enough slots available. This can sometimes not be clear when booking a mixture of ticket types.
17. What happens if people turn up on the day?
They will politely be turned away. It is important that any visitors book in advance.
18. How long can I stay?
You can stay as long as you like, however we expect a visit to take around 2 hours to enjoy the Anglo Saxon Village and Farm.
19. How often can I visit?
We are looking forward to visitors returning, but in order to keep everyone safe, we’ve had to significantly restrict capacity. We’re asking everyone to be considerate and only book one visit a week for the time being
20. What can I expect from my visit?
Given the unprecedented circumstances, and in order to keep everyone safe, your visit to Jarrow Hall will feel different from normal.
Firstly, you will need to book tickets or a slot (if you are an annual passholder) on our website before arriving.
You will be asked to follow arrows, keep a social distance of 2m from other visitors and follow a one-way system in some parts of the site. It’s vital that you follow these instructions – they are for everyone’s safety.

Our gift shop will be open, but there is a limited amount of stock and there are limits to the numbers of people who can enter the shop at a time. We would like to encourage payment by card to protect our staff and volunteers
21. Will you be asking visitors to wear facemasks or other PPE?
Visitors may wear face masks should they wish. In line with government guidance, our staff will wear visors inside the building, but they don’t have to on the Farm or Anglo-Saxon Village, but they are free to do so.
22. Is your café open?

23. Will there be somewhere to sit and eat?
Hive Coffee Company are making picnic tables available on the lawn behind Jarrow Hall house for people to eat and drink, but these must be booked in advance. These tables are for food and drinks purchased at Hive only.
If you want to eat your own picnic you are welcome to use the picnic benches on the lawn beside the natural play space within the Farm area. Please do not move these tables and ensure you socially distance from other visitors.
24. Can I bring my own food and drinks?
Yes, visitors are welcome to use the picnic benches on the lawn beside the natural play space within the Farm area. Please use the litter bins provided or even better take your litter home with you.
25. Will your gift shop be open?
Our gift shop will be open, but there is a limited amount of stock and there are limits to the numbers of people who can enter the shop at a time. Payment is by card only to protect our staff and volunteers.
26. I'm trying to book for myself and my children/carer/member (etc.) but it won't let me. It says there are enough tickets of each type. What is happening?
Our system only knows the total number of slots available across all types. Whatever the drop-down menu for ticket numbers is showing, this is actually the TOTAL available. Unfortunately there is no way for us to avoid this.
